Texting at School

Produced By: Daniel Tuggerson and Michael Hopkins Texting at school has been a problem lately. Teachers say that it takes away from the students learning ability, while students think that texting in school doesn’t hurt or bother anyone else. ” If you are texting in class and your career is based off of medicine, you are not getting the proper learning material” says Zach Merrill.

PSA Wins Top Prize

Three students from Vanguard’s TV Production program travelled to Tallahassee on March 25th to attend an awards banquet sponsored by the Florida Learn and Serve organization and State Farm Insurance. At the event, several schools that were finalists in the competition were in attendance anxiously awaiting the winner to be announced. Toward the end of the evening, a PSA produced by Vanguard High School and Marion Technical Institute took home the top honor, receiving a $2500 check. The video, produced by Meagan Myatt, Karli Windischmann, and Cliff Craig, featured a ‘financial literacy’ program that was conducted and taught by MTI…

NATIONAL CHAMPS: “Knightly News” Team Scores Three 1st Place Wins at National Convention

NationalChamps_Featured

The announcer said “Vansguard.” “Vansguard High School.” My heart dropped for a split second before I read our name, Vanguard High School, under the words “Sweet 16 News broadcast – First Place” on the center projection screen. Then the cheering started. Vanguard High School’s own Television Production Program, led by Marc Rice, traveled to Orlando Florida to compete in the National Student Television Network Convention. From Hawaii to Connecticut, over 2,000 of the country’s top TV students poured into the Rosen Plaza to put their skills to the test. This year, 26 students made the cut to be part of…

Baby Piglets Born at VHS

piglet

At our own VHS farm, the animal community made room for a few more members. Last school year, Garret Lindsey was approached by his agriculture teacher, Keith Kirby, with an idea to raise a pig for the County Fair. After seeking his parents’ approval, Lindsey agreed. Over the course of the school year, Lindsey cared for the sal’s every need. He dedicated his mornings to feed, bathe, and clean her pen. As one can imagine, this dedicated time not only  further prepared the pig for the approaching competition, but also built a relationship between himself and the pig. Over the…

Students new fashion trend

Silly Bands

Is it true that these colorful bracelets known as “silly bands” are taking over schools? “Silly bands are just like everything else…in a few days they just kind of fizzle out,” said seventeen year old Blake Sands. Due to this new fashion trend attacking children of all ages Knightly News reporters Marissa Wolfgang, Melissa Jamian, and Earl Young took the time to speak with a few students on their opinion on these strange bands. “I like silly bands, yes, because there are many different ones,” said fifteen year old Kyle Vincent. Opinions varied with everyone we spoke to. Winn-Dixie manager…

Arnette House

Over the last 6 days, Alyssa Gervasi, Jodi Lawson and I have been competing in a national competition for the Student Television Network. After we were given the prompt “Solving a Problem in Society” by STN, we chose to do a piece on the Arnette House, a local organization dedicated to troubled youth. We had never worked together as a group until now, and faced many challenges along the way. Conflicting schedules and liability issues that affected the shoot along with the time constraint made this project a difficult task, but the finished product serves its purpose. Telling the story,…

Open House Turn out Lower than Expected

Seiler pic

OCALA – Every year Vanguard High, like most schools, has an open house. Open house is one day out of the school year where the parents or guardians can  come and interact with their child’s teachers.  Dominick D’Avanzo, a math teacher at Vanguard, believes this day of the year is beneficial.” Hopefully when they meet you, they’ll remember you, and they’ll have visualization of who I am, and when we talk, we can be pleasant.” Some students believe that this night is very helpful.” When they come here, they can interact with the teachers, and the teachers can give comments…
